Wisdom

Check out more info about this on Brain pickings.  It sounds like a book I'd like to read and a film I'd like to see.

Food Glorious Food

Food Glorious Food..... it is always good to find  new recipes and I recently discovered this cool blog combining recipes, music and interesting words. It is called GourmetGirlfriend.   Also check out They Draw and Cook.

I made this Neil Perry fish curry that I found on the Internet this week and it was yum.... But I used a lot less oil and only one and a half teaspoons of salt.  I also used whiting because that is what I had.

Serves 2

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup Olive Oil
  • 1 large Onion sliced
  • 1 tablespoon finely chopped Ginger
  • 2 Cloves fresh Garlic thinly sliced
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt
  • 1½ teaspoons garam masala
  • 2 teaspoons Paprika
  • 1½ teaspoons Turmeric Powder
  • ½ cup chicken stock or water
  • 400 g Blue eye cod skinned and cut into 4cm cubes
  • ¾ cup Plain Yoghurt
  • 20 ml Lime juice
Method
  1. Heat olive oil in a small frying pan, add onion, ginger, garlic and salt and sweat over low-medium heat for 10 - 15
  2. minutes, stirring occasionally, or until onion is soft and starting to caramelize.
  3. Add spices and cook, stirring constantly for 1-2 minutes or until aromatic.
  4. Add stock or water and simmer for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Add fish to pan and stir gently to cover fish with sauce and simmer for 2 minutes.
  6. Add yoghurt and lime juice, remove from heat and stir gently.
  7. Serve with steamed rice.

Pretty birds

Before I forget, I must remember that a week or so ago whilst enjoying a cup of tea and a read in the sun on the veranda one of our local, pretty little birds - a blue wren, landed on my foot.

Nelson and I made these blue birds out of paper mache.

We found this bower bird nest whilst on a walk.  The boys often collect blue bits and pieces from it.

Another collage - this one a bird.

I like this embroidery.  Might have to try to do something similar!

from penguin and fish

A cool song - "I like birds" by the Eels.

from Geninne's Art Blog, she draws and paints lots of pretty little birds.

I love these drawings of birds by Joel Henriques.  And these....
There is a really good website called Birds in Backyards with lots of information, pictures and bird calls.

The mad scramble for loot.

Chocolate face!

The crazy ice cream cake with General Grievous on top.

Blowing out the candles.

The big bonfire which was Django's favourite part of the day.

Hello Granny.

It was a lovely birthday, a nice sunny day too!

Get some perspective....How rich are you?

I saw this poster on a thought provoking  post about wealth and perspective on The Woman Condition.  She alerted me to an interesting thing called the Global Rich List and i would like to alert you to Kiva where you can loan people small amounts of money to help them with their businesses. You can choose who to loan it to and then find out how they are going.   They then pay it back and you can take your money or loan it to someone else.

If someone asked me if I was rich, my first thought would be no.  But actually I am very rich.  I am not obsessed by or really interested in money but I have never needed to be.  I am lucky to have always had enough.   I am rich because I have never been hungry, homeless or sick.  I have never experienced war or disaster.  I am well educated and have the freedom to choose how and where I want to live. I am very fortunate indeed.

I recently saw a cool book called "Where Children Sleep" by James Mollison which shows photos of children's bedrooms around the world.  I would like to show it to my kids to give them some perspective of life on this planet and how lucky they are.

The Warumpi Band

Black fella, white fella.
It doesn't matter, what your colour.
As long as you, a true fella.
As long as you, a real fella.

All the people, of different races.
With different lives, in different places.
It doesn't matter, what your name is.
We got to have, lots of changes.

We need more brothers, if we're to make it.
We need more sisters, if we're to save it.

Are you the one that's gonna stand up and be counted?
Are you the one who's gonna be there when we shout it?
Are you the one that's always ready with a helping hand?
Are you the one who understands these family plans?

Black fella, white fella.
Yellow fella, any fella.
It doesn't matter, what your colour.
As long as you, a true fella.

All the people, of different races.
With different lives, in different places.
It doesn't matter, which religions.
It's all the same when the, ship is sinking.

What do you read?

 SeaKiwi

"What counts, in the long run, is not what you read; it is what you sift through your own mind; it is the ideas and impressions that are aroused in you by your reading"  Eleanor Roosevelt

I have recently reread Jackson's Track by Daryl Tonkin.  I think every Australian should read this book.  It is a wonderful, moving and tragic true story and shows how misguided white Australian "dogooders" ruined the lives of so many Aboriginal Australians.  The book gives wonderful descriptions and insights into the life of the Aboriginal community.  A way of life we could all learn alot from!

Life's a garden, dig it!

It has been beautiful out in the garden lately.

Beautiful purple cabbages to make purple cabbage salad.

We've had lots of broccoli (much to Nelson and Django's dismay!)

This is the first time I have grown fennel and I quite like it!

This is the result of me forgetting to shut the net and the chooks getting in. Naughty chooks!
